Many analysts explain the tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel purely in terms of geopolitics, security interests, and regional power struggles. However, when we examine the deeper ideological foundations of the Iranian regime, a much more complex picture emerges. In Shia Islamic theology, there is a central belief about the return of the Twelfth Imam, known as Imam Mahdi. According to tradition, the Mahdi entered a state known as the “Great Occultation” in the year 874 AD and will return at the end of time to establish justice and defeat oppression. After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini established the doctrine known as “Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist.” This system places religious authority at the center of political power, with the Supreme Leader acting as the representative of the hidden Imam. Some radical interpretations of this belief suggest that chaos, war, and global conflict could accelerate the conditions for the Mahdi’s return. Scholars sometimes describe this mindset as a form of “apocalyptic accelerationism.” If influential figures within a state believe that history is moving toward an inevitable end-times confrontation, their strategic decisions may not follow the usual logic of diplomacy, economics, or deterrence.
